Child therapy is a type of counselling that focus on children of all age ranges, from young children, to teens, to adolescents. The goal of child counselling would be to break down the mental illnesses they are facing, whether it is one or more and divide them into manageable parts so that they will be able to have a better understanding of them and know how to cope with them.
Child counsellors can treat a variety of issues that cause an individual either social distress, emotional distress, or a mental health illness. Some of the most popular issues include:
- Parents divorcing
- Grief from losing a family member, pet, or friend
- Experiencing/ witnessing any sort of trauma at any stage in their life
- Anxiety and/ or depression
- The birth of a sibling
- Mental illnesses
- Being bullied
- Experiencing any type of abuse
- Take on more responsibility (age appropriate)
- A geographic change in school, home, family, or country
- Substance or behavioural addictions
Child therapy is used to try and achieve many things. Some of which include:
- Building the child’s self-esteem levels.
- Working on communication skills.
- Teaches them how to effectively manage any anxiety or emotional distress they are feeling.
- Understand that they are not to be blamed for what has happened to them/ what they have witnessed.
- Educates the child how to deal with situations in the best possible way.
- Make them aware of different coping methods
