What is Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)?
We tend to carry feelings around in our unconscious and not be aware of them yet they still affect the way we function, think and feel in the present moment in time, despite the past situations no longer being relevant. Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy located in Birmingham, focuses on identifying the trauma or issues, which are underlying your current situation. The treatment is based on Desensitisation and Reprocessing the memories of the situations which caused the issues.
What happens in EMDR sessions?
When you attend your EMDR treatment session at our office in Birmingham, you will be asked to remember the traumatic event, hold on to the negative memory and the negative feelings whilst you’re doing this, the therapist will move their hand (using bilateral stimulation) (BLS) and ask you to follow their movements with your eyes, whilst keeping your head still. The movements being used at the same time as you hold the memory and feelings will desensitize the memory/feelings, losing their intensity as the times passes in the session. As you’re doing your treatment, the therapist will check to see if there’s anything else which has come up, if it has, you’ll work on that issue whilst you’re there.
What can EMDR treat?
The number of sessions of EMDR that you’ll need depends on you, this won’t be a conscious choice, it depends on what comes up in your unconscious whilst you in the sessions. You may find that one session is enough for you or it may take a few, either way, is okay.
