The basis of Transactional Analysis (TA) therapy is promoting personal growth and change, this approach is great for well-being and helping you to real your full potential in all area’s of your life. This therapy approach believes you have 3 ego states: parent, adult and child, these different states can affect the way you feel and behave. Through therapy using the 3 ego states as well as other tools, your therapists can provide insight into problem-solving behaviours, with the goal of helping you regain autonomy in your life.
TA ego states are separated into three aspects, adult, child and adult, these states are a key part of your personality and can influence your current feelings, thoughts and behaviours:
Parent – This ego state has a set of beliefs, thoughts, feelings and behaviours learnt from our parents and other people throughout life. This could lead to the Parent state to be either supportive or critical.
Adult – This ego state stays in the present moment in time and isn’t influenced by your history, this ego state tends to be the most rational out of the three.
Child – This ego state focuses on your childhood; the thoughts, behaviours and feelings are learnt from childhood and brought into the present moment in time
Depending on which ego state you’re currently in you may convey yourself depending on how that ego state operates – past, present, supportive or critical.
