What is Jungian Analysis?
Carl Jung created the Jungian analysis therapy, a psychoanalytical approach, with the belief system that your unconscious has different layers, with much deeper unconscious consisting of patterns (archetypes). These patterns are the reasons why you have habits, which you struggle to break. Analysing these archetypes is an important part of your therapy.
Therefore the approach aims to analyse these archetypes in order to better understand the human self. Through the process of self-awareness, transformation and actualisation, Jungian therapy can help individuals see what is out of balance in their psyche. This is to empower them to consciously make changes that will help them to become more balanced and whole.
There will be experienced in your life, which creates a conflict with the expectations of your inner archetypal, these internal conflicts can be addressed in therapy to allow you to continue living your life and use your energy on more productive situations as you see fit.
The principles of Jungian Therapy
There tend to be 4 main types of archetypes in human beings although you may find that there are more.
The association between the unconscious and conscious parts of your mind are represented in the self. The self-archetype is considered the central archetype of your psyche, encompassing wholeness and has the courage to achieving fulfilments; the self-has the desire to reach his/her full potential though supporting individuation.
The shadow reveals deeper insights into our psyche, our repressed, memories, feelings, ideas and even wants. The belief is that these deeper insights are within us all and are communicated to us through dreams or visions, through different forms. Your shadow can be projected onto other people, Jungian analysis is based on merging the shadow and self together, allowing self-acceptance to take place, which plays a part in achieving wholeness.
This archetype is based on what you show the world as a representation of who you are, this tends to be the way you want to be viewed as opposed to showing the real you. Often this persona, when utilised a lot, can lead to confusion about the true self, leading you to believe this persona is the real you. Through Jungian analysis raising your awareness and through self-actualisation, you’re able to separate the two from each other, leading to the self-being prominent.
The Anima is considered the feminine aspects of the male psyche whereas the Animus is considered the masculine aspects of the female psyche. There is an assumption in Jungian analysis is that each gender has aspects of the opposite gender in their psyche and these are parts of our true self. The Anima/Animus can also be projected and may even lead us to look for a partner who reflects our Anima/Animus. These archetypes can be suppressed due to social conditioning, where a male may repress any aspects, which are perceived as feminine, and a female may repress any aspect that may be masculine. Jungian analysis works on accepting these archetypes leading to wholeness.
